Explore Skåne: Skåneleden: Midsummer hiking trip. From Genarp to Stenshuvud.
We did not celebrate Midsummer this year. We were hiking the Skåneleden from Simrishamn to Stenshuvud. Our midsummer was out into nature - hiking, camping and swimming.
We started our Midsummer weekend on Thursday evening when the first plan was to hike around Genarp woods. We took a bus to Genarp from Malmö. When we left Malmö around 9pm, it still seemed as freakishly great weather for midsummer (no rain!!!), and we saw a beautiful strong red colour sunset through the bus windows... It seemed perfect!
As it usually is, when you think its too good to be perfect, the Mr Murphey law hears you. As soon as we arrived in the small town Genarp, and we started hiking into the woods... Hello, the midsummer rain! It not just rained, but it felt like a bucket of water is thrown on us from the sky for the next couple of hours. We did not reach our planned destination - a hiker's shelter, but we found a big Pinetree with lower branches to pitch the tent and sleep in a dry spot. In the tent, it sounded like a crazy storm outside... All night long.
The next morning we woke up and it was the hot sun! We decided it would be better if we went to the beach if it's this hot after a rainstorm I like being in the woods in summer, but I can not endure too hot weather, especially in Nordics.
It was Midsummer's Day so many people were waiting for the train or bus in Lund. We were worried if we will have a space on the bus... It was our luck to catch a bus from Lund to Simrishamn (using Skåne sommarkort) that many people did not take our bus! From Simrishamn we went to Rörum, and we started going to the beach near following the Skåneleden to Stenshuvud. Stenshuvud beach was our destination for Friday night.

On the beach we made our campsite, cooked our simple dinner and spent a long time swimming, also we drunk the latvian beer I had carried all this time. We did not violate the rules of law, if you are wonderign how come we are CAMPING on the national park landmark?! We were not, we were outside the Stenshuvud landmark. Late in the evening we went to Stenshuvud National Park and wandered to the top of Stenshuvud. The scenery was breath-taking! When hiking back to our campsite, the moon was so big and SO BRIGHT ORANGE! It seemed very mysteriously mystical and perhaps even a bit creepy, but more beautifully creepy, if that even makes sense. Sadly I have no night photography skills, so, the photo you see here is a bit shaky, yet can at least see the crazy colour!
It was a great midsummer for both of us because I wanted to do a hiking midsummer, not to celebrate with many people, not to drink and eat much, or do traditions that nobody really knew why they are doing them. It was good that both of us felt the same. One of the best Midsummer "parties" - being alone at the beach, skinny dipping and just enjoying the silence and calmness of the sea scenery. The water was so crystal clear, yet very cold, but it did not stop me to swim like a seal. Cold water is healthy to us, so, gotta get used to it.
Oh, must mention, the next day we hiked back passing through the park and stopped at the cafe which lies next to it... They serve a CAKE BUFFET , eat as much as you want! A very good midsummer day breakfast:)
Nothing better than homemade cold beetrout soup after camping weekend! |
